Fitting a shelf on the wall: step-by-step guide with wall anchors
Fitting a shelf is often the first DIY project in the house. It must still be well straight, well fixed, and able to support the planned weight. This guide explains everything, from choosing the anchors to the final check.
Step 1: choosing the right fixing support
It all depends on the nature of your wall:
- Plasterboard (drywall): special plasterboard anchors or Molly anchors
- Concrete or block: standard nylon anchors
- Hollow brick: special hollow-brick anchors (expansion type)
- Wood (partition): expansion anchors or direct screws for thick partitions
Step 2: choosing the anchors according to the weight
Simple rule: a shelf loaded with books or heavy objects must use anchors capable of supporting double the total weight. For a standard 60 cm shelf moderately loaded, 6 mm anchors are generally sufficient in concrete. In a plasterboard partition, you must use Molly anchors that open out behind the board.
Step 3: measuring and marking
Position the shelf at the desired height. Using a spirit level, mark the position of the fixings. Check the squareness and symmetry. A pencil mark is easy to erase afterwards, so do not hesitate to measure twice.
Step 4: drilling cleanly
Use the bit of the diameter stated on the anchors' packaging. Drill perpendicular to the wall. In concrete, start in normal drilling then switch to hammer drilling. In hollow brick, avoid hammer mode which splits the brick. For plasterboard, drill without hammer action.
Step 5: inserting the anchors and fixing
Drive the anchors flush with the wall (a light hammer tap if needed). Then screw in the brackets or the shelf support. Check with a spirit level that everything is straight before placing the shelf. Tighten firmly without over-forcing.
Step 6: final check
Place the shelf, load it progressively and check the stability. If it moves, retighten the fixings. A shelf that supports the weight of your arms leaned on without bending is correctly installed.
