Assembling a flat-pack furniture without drama: the methodical guide
A well-assembled flat-pack piece of furniture lasts for years; one assembled in a hurry creaks and warps. With a simple method and a bit of organization, you will assemble any piece of furniture without stress or leftover parts.
Preparing the work area
- Clear a space on the floor (line it with cardboard to avoid scratching the panels)
- Gather the tools: Phillips and flathead screwdrivers, a hammer, a small adjustable wrench
- Read the instructions all the way through once before starting
- Check that all parts and hardware are present by counting them
Identifying the parts
Most instructions use letters (A, B, C...) for the panels and numbers for the hardware. Label the panels with a sticky note stuck on the invisible side to avoid mixing them up. Count the screws by type in separate small containers.
The assembly order
- Follow the instructions in order: each step prepares the next
- Only tighten the screws partially until the frame is assembled
- Assemble the sides and cross members first, then the interior panels
- Check the squareness (equal diagonals) before tightening everything
- Tighten fully once the frame is stable and true
Tip: The secret of furniture that doesn't creak: never tighten a screw until all the parts of the step are in place. A loosely assembled frame naturally settles square before the final tightening.
The classic mistakes
- Assembling on carpet: the furniture is crooked and gets scratched
- Tightening too early: the holes no longer align for the following steps
- Mixing up screws that look the same but have different lengths
- Forcing with a screwdriver that is too large and damages the screw heads
Finally, if a part seems missing at the end, reread the instructions before concluding: some parts are used ahead of time or delivered in duplicate. If a part really is missing, most brands will send a free replacement part on request.
