Unclogging a shower: the effective method without harsh products

A shower that drains slower and slower is one of the most common plumbing issues. Before calling a professional, there are several simple and effective methods to unclog a shower drain. The key is to diagnose the cause of the clog, because hair, soap residue and limescale are not treated exactly the same way.

Diagnosing the origin of the clog

Start by observing the drainage speed and the behavior of the water. If the water stagnates only in the shower, the clog is in the trap or the nearby pipe. If several rooms overflow at the same time, the problem affects the building's common drain stack. In the latter case, a plunger on a single sink will not be enough and you may need to notify the building management.

Dismantling the trap: the most effective method

1. Place a basin and rags under the trap to catch the stagnant water.

Using a plunger and a snake

• The manual snake: insert the cable into the pipe turning the handle, until you feel the resistance of the clog
• The electric snake: for deep clogs, but be careful not to pierce an old pipe
• The manual drain pump, more effective than a plunger on shower traps without a flat bottom

To use the snake correctly, first remove the drain grate if possible. Insert the cable guiding it gently, then work the handle with back-and-forth motions. When the clog gives way, you feel a resistance that suddenly disappears. Finish by rinsing thoroughly with hot water to flush out the loosened debris.

Preventing clogs in the future

Prevention is still the best solution. Install a hair catcher in the drain and empty it after every shower. Once a month, pour a cup of baking soda followed by a cup of vinegar to maintain the network. Avoid letting cotton, wipes or soap residue fall into the drain, as they create stubborn clogs that eventually require professional high-pressure descaling.
