Repairing a leak on a pipe: 4 fast, long-lasting methods

A leak on a pipe, even a minor one, cannot wait: a few liters lost every day can swell a wall, make a ceiling mold or send the water bill climbing. Depending on the type of pipe (copper, PVC, PEX or multilayer) and the nature of the leak (crack, joint, tap-off), the solutions range from a quick repair to replacing the section. This guide presents the durable repair methods, their limits and the precautions to take before turning a leak into a real project.

Assessing the leak and shutting off the water

First mandatory step: close the main water supply, then open a downstream faucet to purge the pressure. Mop the pipe and locate the exact spot of the leak by wiping it with a dry cloth. Distinguish the pressurized leak (water jets out) from simple seepage (permanent dampness): the former demands an immediate repair, the latter lets you think through the best solution. Also cut the power to the water heater if the leak is near an electrical point.

Tip: The safest approach remains to never repair blind: dismantle or expose the pipe to see the length of the crack. A crack longer than 2 centimeters exceeds the capacity of most putties and requires replacing the section.

The repair clamp, the most reliable repair

The repair clamp (or pipe clamp) is the most durable solution for a crack on a copper or steel pipe. Choose a model whose diameter exactly matches the pipe, measured with a caliper or a ruler. Place the rubber gasket over the crack, close the clamp and tighten the two screws alternately with an Allen key. Restore the water pressure and check the tightness after five minutes.

  1. Measure the outside diameter of the pipe to choose the right clamp.
  2. Clean and degrease the area with a cloth and acetone.
  3. Position the clamp so the gasket fully covers the crack.
  4. Tighten the screws crosswise, first by hand, then with the Allen key without forcing.
  5. Reopen the water gradually and check for leaks with a dry cloth.

Epoxy putty and repair tape

For a fine crack on copper, two-component epoxy putty gives excellent results provided you let it cure completely, at least twelve hours. Knead the two components until you get a uniform color, apply in a thick layer overlapping 2 cm on each side of the crack, then smooth it. The silicone repair tape, meanwhile, wraps in a spiral covering half its width with each turn; it is perfect for temporary leaks on garden hoses or drain pipes, but remains less reliable on pressurized water.

In all cases, check that the pipe is not simply split along its entire length, in which case the section must be replaced.
