How to Replace an Electric Radiator: Step-by-Step Guide and Safety
An electric radiator has an average lifespan of 20 to 30 years. Beyond that, it heats less well, reacts slowly and often consumes more for a mediocre result. Old convector heaters in particular are notorious for their "toaster effect": the hot air rises quickly but the room cools down again straight away. Replacing an electric radiator with an inertia or radiant model genuinely changes the perceived comfort and, in some cases, the consumption. Here is how to do it cleanly and safely.
Why replace your electric radiator?
- The radiator heats badly or does not heat at all, despite regular maintenance
- The heating body is deformed, oxidised or the element burns out regularly
- Your convector heater is over 20 years old and the room is hard to heat evenly
- You want to benefit from the "comfort", "eco" and "frost protection" modes of recent units
- Your installation does not provide good thermal comfort: radiators too small for the room
The different types of electric radiators
- The convector heater: cheap to buy (30 to 80 € depending on power), but reactive and less comfortable, to be reserved as a boost
- The radiant panel: heats by radiation, quick temperature rise, price from 80 to 200 €
- The fluid-filled inertia radiator: a heat-transfer fluid stores the heat and releases it gently, budget 200 to 500 €
- The dry inertia radiator: a refractory material (stone, cast iron) stores the heat, very good comfort, from 300 to 700 €
- The towel rail: useful in the bathroom for drying and boost heating
Safety: always cut the power before anything
An electric radiator is connected directly to the supply circuit, at a voltage of 230 volts. Before dismantling anything, switch off the circuit breaker for the heating circuit at the consumer unit, then lock it if possible. Then check the absence of voltage with a voltage tester or a multimeter on the wires you are going to touch: this step is not optional, even if the power seems to be off. If your home is old and the wires have no earth conductor, or if the circuit is not dedicated to heating, call in an electrician.
Replacing the radiator step by step
- Switch off the circuit breaker for the heating circuit and check the absence of voltage with a tester
- Unscrew the radiator from its brackets or fixing feet and move it away from the wall
- Photograph the connection before disconnecting the wires: you will be able to reproduce exactly the same connection
- Identify the conductors: the live, the neutral and the earth (yellow-green wire) must all be present
- Remove the old connectors or junction blocks and install the new fixing bracket, screwing it securely
- Connect the wires of the new radiator in the same order, respecting the colours (live to live, neutral to neutral, earth to earth)
- Hang the radiator, restore the power and check the operation on all the modes
Recycling the old radiator
An old electric radiator is not ordinary waste: it contains metals (aluminium, steel) and sometimes oil in the case of fluid radiators. Take it to the recycling centre in the WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) stream. Retailers are also required to take back the old appliance free of charge when you buy a new one. Never throw a fluid radiator into a normal bin: the oil in the circuit must be treated.
When to call in an electrician
- No earth conductor is present on the existing circuit
- The circuit is not dedicated to heating or its wire section seems insufficient
- You want to move the radiator to another room or create a new line
- The wires are aluminium, damaged or blackened: a sign of overheating
- You have the slightest doubt about the compliance of your electrical installation
Replacing an electric radiator identically is an operation accessible to a careful DIYer, provided you cut the power, check the absence of voltage and respect the wire colours. On the other hand, any modification of the circuit, addition of a socket, relocation or doubt about the earth must be entrusted to a professional: electrical safety is not negotiable. With a well-sized inertia unit, you gain everyday comfort and your heating bill can drop noticeably.
