How to Replace a Light Switch: Single or Double, User Guide
A tired switch, a colour that no longer matches your decor or a faulty mechanism: replacing a light switch is one of the most frequent electrical jobs for the DIYer. Simple in appearance, this operation requires knowing the basics of wiring: the live wire, the switch wire (switched live) and, in some cases, the neutral. In this guide, we look at how to replace a single switch and a double switch, safely and in compliance with standard NF C 15-100.
The tools you need
- An insulated screwdriver (flat and Phillips) and wire strippers
- A non-contact voltage tester
- A new single or double switch compatible with your standards and your back box (box depth 40 mm minimum)
- Wago connectors or a junction block if you need to extend a wire that is too short
- A spirit level to check the level of the mechanism
- Insulating gloves and safety glasses
Understanding the wiring of a switch
A classic switch only interrupts the live wire. Two wires generally arrive on the mechanism: the incoming live, often red or brown, and the switch wire, which goes back to the light fitting, often black or a different colour. The neutral is not connected to the switch in a simple installation. On a double switch, two independent mechanisms are mounted side by side: a common live feeds both circuits, and each button controls its own switch wire. Always respect this logic to avoid creating a return through the neutral, which is forbidden by the standard.
Replacing a single switch, step by step
- Switch off the circuit breaker for the circuit concerned at the consumer unit and check the absence of voltage at the switch with a non-contact tester
- Unclip the face plate and unscrew the switch mechanism to access the wiring
- Photograph the existing wiring: identify the incoming live wire and the switch wire before disconnecting anything
- Unscrew the terminals, remove the worn-out mechanism and strip the wires to 8 to 10 mm
- Connect the wires to the new switch: the live to the terminal marked L, the switch wire to terminal 1 or L1, according to the manufacturer's markings
- Tighten the screws, pull gently on each wire to check the hold, then screw the mechanism into the back box
- Put the face plate back on, restore the power and test
Replacing a double switch
The method is identical to that of the single switch, except that a double switch has three wires to connect: the common live and two switch wires. Connect the incoming live to the L terminal of the mechanism that supplies both circuits, then connect each switch wire to its corresponding control terminal. Before reassembling, press each button to check that it controls the right light. If your double switch must power a roller shutter or a ceiling light with a neutral, follow the diagram supplied by the manufacturer, because the wiring may differ.
Which switch to choose for your room?
Beyond the simple rocker model, you have the choice between touch switches, lever switches, dimmers or smart switches controllable from a smartphone. For a kitchen, a two-way (staircase) switch installed at both ends of the room is often more practical than a simple switch. Always check the depth of your back box before buying: LED or smart mechanisms need more space. Prefer NF- or CE-certified equipment and recognised brands: a switch is operated hundreds of times a year, and the quality of the mechanism makes all the difference over time. If you are renovating several rooms, keep the same range for aesthetic consistency.
The mistakes to avoid
- Not switching off the circuit breaker and working on a live circuit
- Swapping the live and the switch wire: the light fitting would stay live even when off, a real danger
- Connecting the neutral to a single switch: forbidden by the standard and dangerous
- Forcing the mechanism into a box that is too small or badly positioned
- Using a poor-quality switch that does not comply with the standard (NF marking required)
Replacing a single or double switch only takes about twenty minutes once the materials are gathered. The key to success is to cut the power, identify the live and switch wire precisely, and tighten the connections well. If your installation has no earth wire or has discoloured or brittle wires, call in an electrician: bringing your network up to standard is better than an emergency repair.
