Installing a ceiling light safely: the complete guide
Replacing a ceiling light is one of the most common and most accessible electrical jobs for the DIYer. The operation seems simple, but it requires strict safety rules: switching off the power, checking the absence of voltage and connecting the conductors correctly. This guide takes you step by step through installing a ceiling light safely, whether you start from a simple lampholder or replace an old light fitting.
The necessary tools and gear
- A ceiling light with its fixing system (mounting plate, canopy or mounting bracket)
- An insulated screwdriver (flat-head and Phillips) and a wire stripper
- A non-contact voltage tester or a multimeter
- Wago connectors or a connector block if your ceiling light has no integrated terminal block
- Screws and wall anchors suited to your ceiling (concrete, plaster or wood)
- A stable stepladder, insulating gloves and safety glasses
Before you start: identifying the wires
At the ceiling you will generally find three conductors: the live (red, brown or black), the neutral (blue) and the earth (yellow-green), sometimes accompanied by a lamp return wire coming from the switch. Before dismantling the old ceiling light, note or photograph the arrangement of the wires. The live is often connected to the lamp return wire in the ceiling light's junction box. If you cannot clearly distinguish the conductors, use a multimeter in voltmeter mode after restoring the power, then switch it off again before working.
The installation steps step by step
- Switch off the lighting circuit breaker at the consumer unit and check the absence of voltage with a non-contact tester at the lampholder or the ceiling wires
- Dismantle the old ceiling light: unscrew the canopy, disconnect the wires and set them aside identifying them (live, neutral, earth, lamp return)
- Prepare the new ceiling light: fix the canopy or the mounting plate to the ceiling with screws and wall anchors, making sure it is horizontal
- Strip the conductors to 8 to 10 mm and connect them to the ceiling light's terminal block: the live on terminal L, the neutral on terminal N and the earth on the earth terminal marked with the symbol
- Tighten the terminal block screws properly then pull gently on each wire to check it is held
- Refit the body of the ceiling light onto its canopy and engage the fixing system
- Restore the circuit breaker and test the switch

If the ceiling light stays off after installation, start by checking the bulb and the switch. Then test the presence of voltage upstream with your multimeter. The most common cause is a live wire swapped with the neutral: if the ceiling light has a screw-base socket, the live must always arrive on the centre contact and the neutral on the thread, to avoid any risk of electrocution when changing the bulb. Correct the connection and check that all the tightenings are right.
Choosing the right bulb for your ceiling light
The bulb's power depends on the surface and the use of the room: allow about 250 to 300 lumens per 10 m² for ambient lighting, which corresponds to a 3 to 4 W LED for 250 lm. For a living room, a 10 to 15 W LED (about 1100 to 1600 lumens) generally suits. Check the base compatible with your ceiling light: E27 (large screw base), E14 (small base), GU10 or B22 depending on the model. If your ceiling light is equipped with a dimmer or a motion detector, choose a dimmable bulb or a detector-specific bulb, otherwise you risk flickering or premature wear.

- Working on a circuit that is still live or without checking the absence of voltage with a tester
- Confusing the live and the neutral: swapping the neutral and live can make changing the bulb dangerous
