How to Install a Glass Shower Screen Without Calling in a Pro
A glass shower screen transforms the bathroom: it protects the floor from splashes while letting the light through. This guide is aimed at intermediate-level DIYers who want to install their screen themselves. You will learn how to choose the right model, prepare the opening and fix the glass safely.
Choosing the right type of glass screen
Two main families exist: the fixed panel, screwed to the wall and the shower tray, and the pivot or hinged panel, fitted with hinges that open outwards. For an opening of 80 to 100 cm, a simple fixed panel of 6 to 8 mm toughened glass is enough. Check that the glass is toughened and complies with standard EN 12150.
- Measure the width of the shower opening at three points (bottom, middle, top) and keep the smallest value
- Subtract 5 to 10 mm to leave an installation clearance for the panel and its fixings
- Choose a toughened glass of 6 mm minimum and aluminium profiles suited to the wall
- Check the verticality of the wall with a spirit level and make up for any gaps with packers
- Plan the fixings: hammer-in wall plugs for solid walls, Molly bolts for plasterboard
Installing the rail and the panel
The floor rail is fixed onto the cleaned and degreased tray, using a neutral silicone sealant laid in a zigzag. Place the panel in the rail, pack it perfectly vertical, then screw the fixing brackets onto the wall. Let the silicone cure for 12 to 24 hours before using the shower.
Sealing and finishing touches
Apply a sanitary silicone bead between the panel and the wall, as well as along the floor rail. Smooth the beads with a wetted finger or a joint smoother, then let dry completely before the first use.
Precautions and mistakes to avoid
- Neglecting the verticality of the wall: a gap of more than 5 mm prevents a correct seal
- Using non-toughened glass, dangerous in the event of impact or breakage
- Forgetting the installation clearance: a panel that is too wide simply cannot be installed
- Working without gloves or glasses: the edges of the metal profiles are sharp
- Turning the shower on before the silicone is completely dry
