Hanging a picture on the wall without damaging it: hooks and light solutions
Hanging a picture seems harmless, until the frame falls or the wall gets damaged. The right method depends on the weight of the frame and the type of wall. Here is how to choose the fixing suited to each situation.
Assessing the weight of the frame
Weigh the frame with its contents. This figure decides everything: under 2 kg for a simple adhesive hook, beyond that you need a real anchor. A large frame in a wood and glass frame often weighs more than you think.
For light frames (under 2 kg)
- Double-sided adhesive hook: perfect on clean paint, removes without a trace
- Nail hook: for painted drywall walls, without heavy tools
- Clip hook: for small framed pictures, easy to remove
For medium frames (2 to 10 kg)
Use an anchor suited to the support: a universal anchor in drywall or concrete, a Molly anchor if the frame exceeds 8 kg on drywall. Drill to the exact diameter indicated, insert the anchor, then screw in the hook or screw.
For heavy pictures (over 10 kg)
- Locate the metal studs behind the drywall with a detector
- Screw directly into the stud for very heavy pieces
- Use two fixings spaced apart rather than a single central one
- Plan a safety cable to the wall for valuable pieces
The right height
The museum rule: the center of the picture should be at 150 cm from the floor (at eye level). Above a sofa wall, place the bottom of the frame 20-25 cm above the backrest. For a composition, align the centers of the frames on the same line.
With the right fixing according to weight and a thought-out height, your pictures stay in place for years without damaging the wall.
