Saving energy at home: the gestures that really work
In a French home, heating represents on average about two-thirds of the energy bill, far ahead of domestic hot water, cooking and appliance electricity. That is where the biggest savings lie, but also the simplest gestures. Saving energy does not mean living in the cold or switching off everything that blinks: it means targeting the items that really consume and adopting smart settings. Here are the gestures that work, with realistic orders of magnitude rather than magic promises.
Heating: the first lever
Lowering the set-point temperature by one degree generally saves around 7% on heating consumption. Going from 20 °C to 19 °C in the living areas, lowering to 16-17 °C at night and programming a drop when away therefore produces an effect far greater than all the other gestures combined. Servicing your boiler once a year, bleeding your radiators and having the system's settings checked are among the most cost-effective actions: a poorly adjusted system consumes without delivering anything.
Lighting: switching everything to LED
- Replacing an incandescent or halogen bulb with an LED divides lighting consumption by about 4 to 5
- Think LED in the rooms lit for a long time: living room, kitchen, hallways, exterior lighting
- Turn off the light when leaving a room, but don't exhaust yourself: switching on consumes no more than a few seconds of use
- Use natural light as much as possible and bedside lamps rather than the ceiling light in the evening
- Install presence detectors in the hallways and the toilet: no more forgotten lights
Appliances on standby: an invisible waste
Appliances on standby (televisions, internet boxes, consoles, plugged-in chargers, clock appliances) generally represent a few percent of the electricity bill, sometimes more depending on the number of devices. Their combined consumption can reach a few hundred kilowatt-hours per year, i.e. a few dozen euros. The simplest solution: plug the audio-video and computer equipment into power strips with a switch and cut everything at night. The internet box, which runs day and night, is often the biggest item: depending on your usage, switching it off at night may be feasible if you don't need the landline phone.
Cold: refrigerator and freezer
- Set the refrigerator around 4 °C and the freezer around -18 °C: every degree below costs more
- Let the appliances breathe: a refrigerator stuck against a wall or in a poorly ventilated alcove consumes more
- Defrost the freezer before a thick layer of frost forms: frost insulates and makes the motor run more often
- Replace worn door seals that let the cold escape
- An old energy-hungry refrigerator can consume several times more than a recent model rated A
Domestic hot water: every liter counts
Heating water generally represents 10 to 15% of a home's energy bill. Shorter showers, an economical shower head, an aerator on the taps and a properly set water heater (around 55 to 60 °C, neither too much nor too little) reduce both water and energy consumption. The hot water tank must be maintained: a limescaled heating element heats less well and consumes more. If your tank is very old and produces little hot water, replacing it with a better-insulated model is often cost-effective.
Cooking and washing: the small gestures
- Cover the pots while cooking: the water boils faster and the energy used drops
- Use pots suited to the size of the burners and favor induction if you have it
- Wash laundry at 30 °C when possible and choose the eco programs of the washing machine and dishwasher
- Run the appliances only full: a half-empty cycle wastes water and electricity
- Dry laundry on a line or rack whenever possible; the dryer remains very energy-hungry
The mistakes to avoid
- Cranking the heating to 23 °C hoping to heat faster: the boiler will just consume more
- Switching off a refrigerator to go away for the weekend to "save": the food thaws and restarting costs more
- Multiplying electric space heaters: often the most expensive appliances to run
- Trusting the "energy saver" devices sold online that plug into an outlet: most do not reduce real consumption
- Buying a very energy-efficient appliance that is oversized for its use
Saving energy at home rests on a few powerful levers — heating settings, switching to LED, hunting standby consumption and being sober with hot water — and many small gestures that add up. Real savings vary by home and habits, but a reduction of around 10 to 20% of the energy bill is realistic for most households that apply these tips without investing. More efficient equipment (insulation, recent boiler) extends this effort, but the daily gestures remain the first step, free and immediate.
