Installing wall tiles in the kitchen: an easy backsplash

The backsplash is the area between the countertop and the upper cabinets. Protecting it with tile or a backsplash softens the kitchen and makes it easy to clean. It's a perfect weekend project.

Choosing the backsplash tile

The materials

Preparing the surface

  1. Clean the wall with a degreaser and rinse
  2. Fill in any small holes
  3. Mark out the area with masking tape
  4. Check the base is level with a spirit level

Laying the tiles

  1. Spread the adhesive over a small area (one square meter) with the notched trowel
  2. Lay the tiles starting from the center of the area
  3. Insert the spacers for even grout lines
  4. Cut the end tiles with the tile cutter
  5. Let dry for 24 hours before grouting
Tip: Start the layout in the center and distribute the cuts symmetrically at both ends: the result looks more balanced than with a single cut on one side.

Grouting

  1. Apply the grout with a float in a diagonal motion
  2. Smooth with a damp sponge in diagonal strokes for an even surface
  3. Let dry then polish with a dry cloth
  4. Apply a silicone sealant between the backsplash and the countertop

Once the silicone sealant is applied between the tile and the countertop, your backsplash is watertight and ready to face kitchen splashes for years.
