How to drill tiles without cracking them: the complete guide
Drilling tiles is one of the DIY operations that scares people the most: one wrong move and it is an unrepairable chip, or worse, a crack that goes across the room. Yet with the right method and the right gear, it is a simple operation that takes under two minutes per hole.
The indispensable gear
- A carbide bit with a cross tip (special tile) — never a standard bit
- A variable-speed drill or driver
- Masking tape or a centre punch
- A small spray of water or a damp sponge
- Safety glasses and a dust mask
The step-by-step technique
- Stick a piece of masking tape on the area to drill: it stops the bit slipping and limits chips
- Mark your reference with a centre punch or directly by drilling lightly
- Start the drill at LOW speed (200 to 400 rpm): it is the key to not cracking the tile
- Apply regular, moderate pressure, without forcing
- Regularly moisten the area to cool the bit
- Once the tile is through, you feel less resistance: continue gently to the desired depth
How to avoid chips?
The chip almost always occurs at the exit of the bit, on the back face of the tile, or when the bit slips on the glazed surface. The masking tape solves the slipping problem. For the bit exit, the best solution is to work on an already laid tile: the support (wall or floor) prevents the chip from forming.
And if the tile is glazed, shiny or very hard?
Very hard tiles (porcelain, stoneware) require specific diamond-tipped bits. Always start with the drill in driver mode (low speed) and let the bit do the work. If the bit smokes or becomes hot, stop, let it cool and spray it.
What depth to drill?
Before drilling, check there are no cables or pipes behind the wall (use a detector). Choose anchors suited to the weight of what you want to fix, and drill to the depth of the anchor plus 5 mm. A simple trick: stick a tape marker on the bit at the right depth.
