Organising your garage storage: 10 tips to find everything at a glance
The garage always ends up becoming a catch-all where bikes, garden tools, boxes and memories pile up. Yet organising your garage storage does not require a big budget or an extension: a simple method, a few well-fixed shelves and used walls are often enough to transform everything. Allow a full weekend for a standard garage of about 15 to 20 m², and you will find every tool in seconds.
Emptying the garage and sorting into three piles
The first step, which cannot be skipped, is to take everything out of the garage. It is the moment to decide the fate of each object, without nostalgia. Gather a few boxes and plan for the recycling centre, the collection truck or the association that comes to collect your donations.

An organised garage is a garage divided into clear zones: workshop, bikes and sport, garden, seasonal storage. Gather the objects of the same category before storing them, then define a zone for each family. The most used must be the most accessible, at hand height.
- Workshop zone: hand tools and power tools near the workbench or pegboard
- Garden zone: mower, spade, rake and bags of soil grouped near the door
- Bikes and sport zone: helmets, pumps and bikes hung on the wall, away from walkways
- Seasonal zone: Christmas decorations, tyres and luggage stored high up or at the back
Making the most of the walls and the vertical space
The floor is the least cost-effective surface of a garage: the walls and ceiling height allow tripling the useful space. Pegboards for tools, rails and hooks for bikes, high shelves for seasonal boxes: everything that can go up must not stay on the floor.
- Fix wall shelves 60 to 80 cm deep at the top of the walls
- Install a pegboard above the workbench for the hand tools

Securing the storage in the garage

Store the dangerous products (petrol, solvents, gardening products) out of reach of children, ideally in a locked cabinet, and never near a heat source or a spark. Wear gloves during the big sort to protect yourself from sharp objects.
