Cleaning a skylight or roof window safely

A dirty roof window lets in less light, hardened seals let through air and water, and a seized mechanism is hard to operate. Yet simple regular maintenance is enough to keep a roof window impeccable for years. This guide explains how to clean the glazing safely, maintain the frame, seals and insect screen, and oil the opening mechanisms.

Cleaning the glazing safely, without climbing onto the roof

Safety is the absolute priority, because you work at height and often on a slope. Open the window completely from the inside and tilt the sash to reach both faces: it is the safest method, without ever climbing onto the roof. Wash the glazing with a suitable product (soapy water, then a glass cleaner) and a squeegee to avoid marks; the hard-to-reach exterior face is cleaned from the inside by opening the window to the vertical position.

1. Clean the frame and profiles with a damp cloth and a gentle product, with no aggressive solvent that would attack the surfaces.
2. Wipe the seals with warm soapy water, dry them, then check that they are supple and free of cracks.
3. Remove the insect screen if it is removable, wash it in soapy water and leave it to dry flat before putting it back.
4. Clean the window's water drainage channels, often blocked by leaves or dust, with a fine wire.
5. Check the condition of the insect screen fixings (velcro or magnets) and replace any tired elements.

Oiling and adjusting the opening mechanisms

A well-oiled mechanism opens in one gesture and locks without effort. Apply a silicone spray oil to the hinges, slides and gears of the mechanism, wiping off the excess so as not to stain the seals. Modern roof windows also have an air inlet vent and flaps: open them to check they work, then put the insect screen back in place.

Checking the watertightness and safety of the window

After cleaning, close the window and check that the handle locks correctly, without play, and that the glazing does not vibrate. Check the replacement seals: if they are hard or cracked, replace them, because they protect against water, wind and noise. Finally check the condition of the safety locks, especially if the window is accessible from the roof.
