Installing a dehumidifier and stopping damp durably

When the walls weep, the windows stream with condensation and a musty smell sets in, moisture has become a comfort and health problem. Before getting out the drill, you have to understand where the water comes from and choose the right solution. This guide explains how to detect the sources of moisture, select a suitable dehumidifier (in liters per day) and use it durably.

Detecting the sources of moisture

Moisture has three main origins: condensation (produced by breathing, cooking and showers), rising damp (groundwater rises into the walls) and infiltration (cracks, roof, gutters). Do the diagnosis: dampness at the bottom of a wall suggests rising damp, irregular stains under a window signal infiltration, widespread condensation indicates a ventilation defect. Also measure the humidity level with a hygrometer: above 60 to 65%, the air is too damp and encourages mold.

  1. Calculate the volume of the room (length × width × height) to define the capacity: count 10 to 20 liters per day for a 20 to 30 m² room, 20 to 30 L/day for 40 to 60 m².
  2. Prefer a compressor model for heated rooms (effective above 15 °C) and a desiccant model for cold rooms like a garage or cellar.
  3. Place the appliance in the center of the room, at least 10 cm from the walls, and close the doors and windows to concentrate its action.
  4. Plug it into an earthed outlet and set the target humidity between 45 and 55%.
  5. Empty the reservoir regularly (some models accept a drain hose) and clean the air filter every month.
Tip: Choose a model with a humidistat: it stops automatically when the target humidity is reached, which avoids running the appliance for nothing and divides the electricity consumption. A 12 L/day dehumidifier consumes on average 200 to 350 W in operation.

Using it effectively and correcting the causes

The dehumidifier treats the symptom, not the cause. For a lasting result, air out the room 10 minutes morning and evening opening the windows wide, and avoid continuous ventilation in cold weather which brings humidity back in. Correct the deep causes: install or improve the ventilation, repair the leaks, treat the rising damp by drying out the walls, and air out the wet rooms after each use.

Maintaining the appliance to keep it efficient

A dehumidifier maintains its performance with few gestures: empty the reservoir before it overflows, clean the filter every month with a vacuum, and check that the rear grille is not dusty. If the appliance frosts up, stop it and let it defrost: it is the sign that the room is too cold for a compressor model.

Precautions and mistakes to avoid

A well-chosen, well-placed dehumidifier dries a room in a few hours and protects furniture, walls and health. But remember: it is an ally, not a magic wand, and must be combined with regular airing and correcting the causes. By combining all three, you take back control of your indoor air for good.
