Installing a drip irrigation system: the setup that saves water

Drip irrigation delivers water directly to the base of each plant, at the right rate and without waste. It saves up to 50% water compared to watering with a jet, while limiting diseases linked to moisture on the leaves. This guide explains how to choose the components, assemble the network and adjust the flow rates for an efficient, long-lasting system.

Planning the network before buying

Before buying, draw your vegetable garden or flower beds and measure the distances: the main tubing should not exceed 60 meters with a single start, and the pressure loss depends on the total flow of the drippers. Simple rule: count 4 L/h per dripper, and if the total exceeds 200 L/h, install a second line or a suitable pressure reducer. Plan one dripper every 30 to 40 cm on vegetable rows.

Assembling the system step by step

  1. Install the timer on the faucet, then the filter and the pressure reducer
  2. Unroll the main tubing along the planned route and cut it to size
  3. Insert the emitters with the supplied punch, respecting the plant locations
  4. Push the adjustable drippers onto the emitters and tighten without forcing
  5. Close the end of each line with a line end cap
  6. Turn on the water and check for leaks at the fittings, tightening the keys if necessary

Adjusting flow rates and durations

Tip: Install the timer out of the sun and frost, for example in a small box or a wooden crate. Before winter, disconnect the timer, purge the network by opening the line end caps and empty the tubes thoroughly: any remaining water freezes, expands and cracks the fittings. In summer, add mulch over the lines to reduce evaporation even further.

Maintenance and troubleshooting

  1. Clean the filter every month and at the start of the season
  2. Visually check the drippers from time to time: an irregular jet signals a clog
  3. Rinse the network in spring by opening the line end caps
  4. Unclog blocked drippers with the supplied needle or with hot water
  5. Replace damaged drippers with identical models for a consistent flow rate

Drippers or soaker hose: how to choose?

The point dripper delivers a precise amount of water at the base of one plant: ideal for spaced plants such as tomatoes, zucchini or roses. The soaker hose, porous along its entire length, diffuses water continuously along a line: perfect for dense rows of lettuce, garlic or flowers. In a row vegetable garden, people often combine both: soaker hose for seedlings and adjustable drippers for larger plants. Note that the soaker hose should be used over limited lengths (30 m maximum) to keep a consistent pressure.
